The original diff in the C2 is being replaced by a Gripper plate diff. It appears that we were just in time as there is damage on the planet gears.
The new diff has a 67 tooth crownwheel & comes with the corresponding 13 tooth pinion, giving a 5.1 final drive.
.The bearings were the first things to go on,
then the speedo drive before popping the diff into the gearbox casing.
Stripping the gears from the old pinion did reveal a bit of a mess. The 1st & 2nd gear retaining
clips had broken. Luckily the design of the box kept the bits in
place & also retains the gear spacing.
The new pinion is slightly different from the original, retaining the early nut fixing at the end instead of the later circlip fixing.
The difference in tooth numbers is
obvious, otherwise reassembly is straightforward.
The broken clips were replaced but otherwise everything else was in excellent condition.
With the pinion back in one piece, the input shaft & selectors were fitted, followed by the other half of the casing.
5th gear sits outside the main casing
We now have to find a suitable n/s inner cv joint to suit.
Unlike the 205, which needed a mix & match between 106 joint & 205 shaft, the C2 just needed the 1600 shaft which has the necessary shorter inner joint.
