For Tilly Powell's third event, we went west, to Down Ampney Airfield in Gloucestershire. An opportunity to meet up with our 'tame' scrutineer, Dominic Hodge & catch up, Dominic is presently based in Germany, so it made a change from phone conversations. The EMCOS Red Dragon I.T. Stages Rally offered 10 stages covering 65 miles & an early finish, as the last stage has to end by 5 o'clock.
We also enjoyed with some seasonal sunshine, lots of it in fact.
The giant straw bales & pallets made for some quite daunting chicanes & the bales alongside the service area produced some interesting acoustics.
Apart from the queue, scrutineering posed no problems & like the last event, noise was after the cars had completed stage one. The noise marshal did ask me if I wanted to wind the crew up by saying that they were over the noise limit. Being a bit early in the day, I let them off that bit of excitement.
The normal, 2 stages, change, 2 stages format was used & it very soon started to take a toll on competitors. They seemed to be dropping like flies. In our area, the Toyota opposite was first to go. Then it was the Skoda to our right, followed by the 205 to our left. We were almost beginning to get a complex about it all.
While all about us were failing, Tilly & Eliot ticked off the stages. No spins this time out but Eliot did muck up one of the splits, so his turn this time.
There were some interesting Freelander moments in the chicane
and the Chevette was supposed to be an original Blydenstein product, so lots of history. While the cars were out playing, there was time to catch up on the news.
The marshals had their work cut out repairing damaged palettes. Bit risky if you ask me.
Our trouble free run continued until the end of stage 9. Our drivers side front strut had started to leak a little. Enough for Eliot to notice but not bad enough to change before the final stage.
So another finish under her belt for Tilly.
