For a first ever rally, The Centenery Stages at RAF Cottesmore, ticked a lot of boxes. Very nice smooth tarmac, not a lot to hit & very large run off areas if something did go wrong. Coupled to that the organisers had laid on 75 miles in just 6 stages.
For the event we were using Martyn Roberts' Toyota AE 86. As we used to run Toyotas ourselves it was quite a little trip down memory lane.
The main problem with this type of venue for someone starting out in rallying is sometimes "seeing" the course. Those of you who have done rally experiences at airfields will probably know the feeling.
So for Martyn it was quite a busy day, trying to give a bit of tuition, while looking out for cones, keeping an eye on the time cards & all the time praying that his precious car would come through it all unscathed.
With the object of the day being to get an upgrade signature there was a fairly relaxed feel to the day. Even the long waits between stages didn't seem too bad in the sunshine.
With 5 of the 6 stages gone Martyn did ask me to take the car round the service area to make sure everything was OK & I did resist the temptation to wind him up.
So with the final stage completed with no dramas, Zarene has the first of the upgrade signatures required.
