A Bank Holiday & a chance to try to build the engines for my Peugeot 504 & the james Shallcross Peugeot Boxer 205.None of this off to the coast or such like. [Tough I hear you say]
The cranks, with their protective coats are ready. The 205 one at the rear was fine, so just a new set of standard size bearings, the 504 one however has had to be reground, not ideal of course, as it removes metal which ultimately weakens the crank but better than risking bearing failure in some remote parts of Africa.
Having fitted the oil seals to the valve guides, the springs & collets are fitted.
The valve clearance is achieved by means of shims and as of course as we han new guides & seats our gaps were going to have closed up. In fact the inlets had closed up so much that there was no gap at all & that makes the job that much more difficult as you have no starting point.
Over the years we have gathered a
reasonable selection of shims, so eventually managed to get gaps on all the valves. So with the head sorted it was time to move on to the block.
We had given it a quick lick of paint to smarten it up, it also makes it easier to clean & to see leaks.
The block has been skimmed following the new liners being fitted. We are of course fitting all new bearings
grooved in the block &
plain in the caps. As usual we are using assembly lube to help when it comes to running in.
End float is taken care of by thrust bearings. Once
again standard size were all that were needed. With the caps torqued up we could check the end float & make sure the crank spun freely in the block.
Time to turn the block over & start installing the pistons.
