205 1400 Challenge

July 22, 2008

Swansea Bay

Chris Hellings & Nick Farmer were looking forward to their second outing on the loose following the success on the Dukeries Rally in June. Chris was leader of the pack going into the event and was looking for a good points finish to consolidate his lead. Joining him in the team Lucas Hunt had a new co-driver James Morgan stepping in to replace Stefan Arndt who was on the Isle of Man with Tony Simpson.

No reports from the drivers yet but judging by the photo Chris seems to have been trying very hard. After 2 stages he was just 9 seconds adrift of Andy Chalmers.

Stage 3 which I believe was Walters Arena was not so good however and he lost a lot of time with 2 overshoots letting Shane Kielthy into second place.

Going into the final stage Chris was still in 3rd place but Shane went of allowing Chris through into 2nd place.

Lucas Hunt meantime had been getting used to a new co-driver & descriptive notes on his first ever proper forest event. Despite straying from the ruts & trying to make his own lines [not the best way to go Lucas] he finished 2nd of the novices and retains 5th place  in the 1400 championship,.

Post event scrutiny proved to be a bit of a mare as Eligibility scrutineer Dominic Hodge decided to put his foot down over the interpretations some people were putting on some of the rules. After about an hour of deliberation results stood the cars in question having their logbooks endorsed requiring mods to be carried out before the next event to comply with the regulations as published.

Twyford Wood

Twyford Wood played host to a 2 wd only rally at the weekend incorporating the 2nd round for the 1400 205'sTwyford_wood. Championship leader Chris Hellings was joined for this event by regular co-driver Nick Farmer leaving Dad Hellings to help out with service. Lucas once again had Stefan Arndt co-driving

This year for a change the weather was kind to everyone but left the crews with a bit of a dilemma over tyre choice. Because of the nature of the venue there is a likelihood of puncturing so the cautious approach was to use worn gravel tyres, being an old airfield the surface is predominantly broken concrete with some bits a lot more broken than others.

Championship favourite Andy Chalmers chose tarmac tyres all round while Chris & Lucas opted for gravel fronts & tarmac rears.

6 stages faced the crews with service after every stage and at the end of stage one Chris & Nick were sure they had made the right tyre choice. When Lucas & Stefan came in Stefan immediately told us to change to Tarmac tyres on the front & this is where having an experienced co-driver pays off.

At the end of stage 2 it was obvious that tarmac tyres had been the correct choice Lucas had taken over 20 seconds off his first stage time, Chris had only managed about 8, so Chris also went over to Tarmac fronts. By this time Andy had pulled enough of an advantage over Chris that he was able to control the class with ease. Shane Keilthy who had given us such a hard battle at Manby was strangely off the pace so Chris was under no pressure from behind.

Lucas meantime was having a great battle for 4th place with Greham Webb & Andy May. Chris North's 205 went out with a blown gearbox.

A little excitement at the end of stage 3 when we checked under the bonnet of Lucas' car to find a split heater hose was as taxing as it got for the service crew. After stage 4 there was an hour & a half service before the final 2 stages of the day.

No problems for either crew on the last 2 stages and valuable points in the bag again but we will have to try to close the gap to Andy before Swansea Bay

Chris took second to a very dominant Andy Chalmers with Shane a distant 3rd while Lucas just lost out to Greham finishing 5th 1400. A quick well done to Sam Jones who also rolled at Manby and had a fairly troubled morning but made it to the finish.

A quick thank you to the Hellings catering department who provided us with food & drinks all day.

Twyford Wood

This weekend sees the 1400cc  205's at Twyford Wood in Lincs. Lucas Hunts reshelled car will make its competition debut & lets hope he does not repeat his Manby performance.

Chris Hellings will be out to try to beat Andy Chalmers who must be this seasons favourite for the Championship.

Shane Kielthy who gave us such a good run last time is in a bit of gearbox trouble but hopefully this will be sorted for Sunday

Highs & Lows on Round 1

22032008276 22032008278 The opening round of this years 205 Challenge certainly proved entertaining but the weather was awesome and I am sure contributed to a lot of the carnage on the event. We had everything from sunshine to snow, hail, rain gale force winds and a lot debate about whether you were better off on tarmac or gravel tyres.

Stage 1 saw Andy Chalmers take a commanding lead, I thing he was about 12th quickest overall, or own Chris Hellings who was co-driven on this occasion by his father Andy was second with Lucas on his very first stage 4th.

Stage 2 ended Andy's hopes when the ignition module failed leaving him stranded on the stage, Chris put in another quick time to give him a nice buffer with which to defend first place. Lucas once again had a clean stage and moved up to 3rd place. Shane Keilthy was also well on the pace and will be someone we have to watch as the season progresses. 2055fchallenge5f2d5fmanby5f20085f00

Lucas, seen here on the left was certainly enjoying his first outing, with dad Richard on hand to offer encouragement. Co-driver Stefan who had got up at 3.0am to get to the start didn't seem to be flagging but like the rest of the competitors couldn't understand why he had left a nice warm bed to freeze to death in the middle of nowhere.

2055fchallenge5f2d5fmanby5f20085f01 Chris and Andy were pleased with progress so far and were enjoying a bit of reliability which had eluded them last year. It was very satisfying to see how well Chris was handling the unusual pressure of being leader of the pack.

Not so kucky was Sam Jones who managed to roll his 1400 and was soon putting the remains on the trailer.

Stages 3 & 4 passed without incident, Chris & Shane matching times and enjoying a really fine battle, a mistake on the 2nd stage by Shane had given Chris the buffer to take some of the pressure off though not enough to let him relax. Lucas meanwhile had started to drop time, and before stage 6 I asked Stefan to maybe give him a bit of a push.

What a mistaka to maka. First I knew was when Darky came over and said "its not too bad". I thought he was on about one of the cars he was running, but oh no. Lucas had joined a load of others who on the day had put their cars on their roofs.2055fchallenge5f2d5fmanby5f20085f03

As soon as the car got back to service, series scrutineer Dominic Hodge came over to check the car and to make sure that damage was in no way going to compromise the crews safety. Having checked the roll cage and the rest of the car we were given the all clear to get the car ready for the next stage. We had about an hour and a half to get the car ready so no major dramas. While I checked Chris' car Andy Tearle who until then had had very little to do other than to add fuel started removing broken glass, fixing covering for the missing windows & generally sorting out the mess. I am told by Stefan that shortly before Lucas had asked him what it was like to roll. Now you know.

An accident on stage 7 meant a very long delay and stage 8 was cancelled so it all came down to this stage. When Chris came in he was told to go to post event scrutineering and while we were there Shane came in. Both drivers were so anxious about times but once again Chris had edged Shane, just 1 second this time but enough to give Chris & father Andy the class win & first pot of the year.

Well done everyone. Lucas by the way finished 6th

New recruit

Chris Hellings will join the Ti line up in the 1400,s for 2008. Chris has been around in the challenge for a couple of years but this is the first time we have had the opportunity to work with him.

Last year Chris suffered reliability problems, particularly related to head gasket failure though on investigation this was more likely to have been caused by one of the liner seals failing. Cooling system pressurised, similar symptoms to head gasket failure, different cause.

Chris will be using the engine that powered Paul Dark to his Championship and in its current form is producing 93bhp. During the year we are looking to find that extra couple of bhp to bring it up to the injected 106 version. [Not the XSI version which is rated at 100bhp]

Chris tried the car earlier & is really looking forward to the season opener next weekend

Phoenix Stages

Easter Saturday sees the opening round of this years Peugeot 205 1400 Challenge at Manby. Details of the event & venue are available at www.eastwoodmotorclub.co.uk then click on Phoenix stages link.

This will be Lucas Hunts very first proper rally and also marks a first for Ti. As far as I am aware we have never competed there [someone will probably now say Oh yes you have back in the dark ages or some such] so it makes a pleasant change to be going somewhere new.

The team will be going up on Friday to give us time to give the car a once over as Lucas has taken it back to St Andrews where he is studying and to sticker it up.

Test Day

Lucas_hunt_stefan_arndt Stefan Arndt with new boy Lucas Hunt, Lucas is the young one on the left at Blyton earlier today. Our thanks to Pat Flynn and all his crew for organising a brilliant day which combined classroom sessions with lots of driving, even the weather was kind to us. OK it was a bit windy but at least there wasn't any rain.

It was nice to meet up with Yokahama's Simon Clark again having worked with him with Takahiro Yoshii in his Honda.Lucas_hunts_205

We had taken the car to Power Engineerings rolling road earlier in the week to set the car up and to provide Dominic Hodge with a yardstick for the challenge 1400's. The car produced 89bhp & I think Dominic will be publishing his BHP & speed in the gear tables shortly. There's something to look forward to.

Lucas expressed himself pleased with his progress now we need him to put the lessons into practice at the opening round at Manby in 2 weeks time
