Lombard Revival Rally

Hectic times as we try to get the remaining cars sorted for the start. News of the tyre supply problem [Colway are in Receivership] has thrown a spanner in the works as the organisers have insisted that all cars start on Colways when we cannot get them so anyone out there with 13", 14" & 15" Rally Plus's PLEASE PLEASE give us a call  on 01491 671200.

Our C2 is nearing completion and is certainly looking the part. We have used many of the parts used on the R2 such as guards & under trays and our suspension is now ready for collection. We are hoping to test at Sweet Lamb on Friday.

Tony Davies's MG is still in build as well so there is lots of midnight oil being burnt.

Lombard Revival Rally

Next big outing for Ti's hire cars is the Revival Rally, when we will field 4 of our own cars plus 2 that are prepared by us.

Don Kettleborough & Pete Chapman will take our enduro C2 for its maiden outing while Tony Davies will drive our enduro MG ZR. Paul Watkins will use one of our 205's with John Davies & Edryd Evans in the other one, Mike East will run his 106 & Peter Bray his Holden Barina or corsa by any other name.

Hectic times in the workshop trying to get everything finished.

Cambrian Rally

Richard Phillipson & Brian Cammack will take the Honda Civic for its next outing at the begining of November. A session at the Higgins rally school at Carno is planned for the Friday prior to the event.

Exeter Rally

Congratulations to Martin Head & Neil Billingham on their class win at Smeatharpe on Saturday. The win means that Martin & Neil take the Wallis's Wagons 1400 Championship as well.

The early morning start 6.30 for noise was a little anti social but for the first time since I have been there it wasn't raining. Martin had managed to pick up a terrible cold which he seems to have passed on to all about him but hey what, and was just looking to get to the finish as that would be enough to win the championship.

The first service [we serviced after every stage] was a little fraught as Martin had managed to miss the flying finish as the cones setting the stage had been taken out by a previous car. A large number of other crews were also soon chasing the Clerk of the Course to try to resolve their respective issues.

After that little drama the rest of the event settled into a steady pattern of stage, half hour service, stage etc broken only by an hour & a half lunch break. [excellent pork roll with all the trimmings thanks to series sponsor Wallis's Waggons]

Earlier in the day Martin had been dicing with a Corsa & very quick Mini. The first stage time meaning for a lot of the event we were in third place with Martin taking the odd couple of seconds a stage out of the Mini but only matching the times of the Corsa. The service area was rapidly emptying as crew after crew retired and soon the Mini joined the list. Second place soon became first when the Corsa also joined the retirements, all we had to do now was to get the MG to the finish.

I had one of those ageing moments when the car didn't appear for the final service & Neil appeared walking in. In order to get the last stage in before dark the organisers were sending the cars straight back out again & Martin had gone straight to the stage start. Panic over.

There were no dramas on the final stage so a class win & championship title was a nice way to end the day.

Jersey Rally

Just a great big disappointment this time & a non finish not caused by gearbox failure.

After a good first stage, only a couple of seconds slower than the C2 the car cut out in the second stage. A frantic bit of phone diagnosis which didn't help very much but the car eventually restarted only to fail about 4 bends later. This time for good.

When Martin eventually managed to get the car back we traced the fault to a bare wire which had been shorting out. Not very good we thought. While mechanic Mike Tucker was climbing about under the dash he found the steering column mounting bracket had broken & had trapped the wire eventually cutting through it & causing the short.

Maybe we were lucky as the steering could have failed anywhere and the consequences could have been very nasty.

Roll on next year

Exeter Rally

Martin Head & Neil Billingham will take their MG ZR to Smeatharpe to try to sew up the Wallis's Wagons Championship.

The electrical gremlin which sidelined the car on Jersey has been sorted and the car will run a 5 speed dog box for this event.

Jersey Rally

Congratulations to Dave Edmunds & Dom Jeans on their class win & 20th overall on last weekends Jersey Rally. A stunning performance when the first time Dave drove they car was on the way to scrutineering.20071013_153819_p1010615_6

This was the first time anyone other than Kaz had used the car & we were anticipating some different feedback from Dave who has loads of experience in many different cars.

I have to say that some of the organisation was a little chaotic and there seemed to be a general lack of information particularly if you were new to the event. Luckily for us Dave has done the event for the past 4 years so was invaluable.

Scrutineering was a bit of a nightmare with both police & DVLA checking vehicle log books, Vin plates & all sorts of other bits & pieces. We were in a spot of bother as we are still waiting for our proper 2007 reg but managed to convince the that all was well in the DVLA world.

Running on Hankooks for this event & 15" as well made deciding on ride height & suspension settings a bit of a mare but we finally got the C2 off to the start.

While all this was going on Martin Heads MG ZR was sailing through its scrutiny & for once had no problem meeting the noise requirements. [The C2 was noisier on tick over than at 4500 ????????]

The event started from the centre of St Helier on Friday afternoon & then did 2 stages before going into service at Gorey this being repeated 4 times before service moved back to St Helier for the night stagesGorey_service

St Helier Night Service

The C2 obviously took a bit of getting used to and during the day we made changes to both ride height  toe settings & tyre pressures before Dave pronounced himself happy with the set up. As the evening progressed Dave got quicker & quicker & was closing in on 3rd place in the class. Then just before the start of the first spectator super special the clutch cable broke & all the good work went out of the window. Luckily Dave was able to drive the stage in 2nd gear after a key start and get back to service where we were able to change the cable.

Unfortunately the final stage of the night was cancelled which meant no chance of making time back so Dave & Dom remained in 4th place overnight.

An early start on Saturday morning saw Dave on a charge. Feeling comfortable with the car the crew set about making up some of Fridays lost time. A similar format with 3 services at the granite quarry & then moving back to Gorey for the final stages.

Jersey_saturday The Escort of Jon Denny Mallen which had been holding second in class was first to go when the unforgiving  walls claimed the off side front and we were soon up into 2nd place though we dropped back to 3rd again when an incorrectly posted time for the Toyota Corolla  of Ray O'Donoghue was put right. 2nd was still well within Dave's grasp though as he was consistently taking time out off the Toyota and starting to match times with the flying Dan Corner. We were shortly to get our second place back when the Corolla died [reason unknown].

When Dan Corner had a massive accident [no one was injured] first place was ours provided we could keep the car going as cars seemed to be dropping out all over the place. With time running out for the road closures the last stage was cancelled and a police escort took the crews back to the ceremonial finish on the esplanade at St Helier.C2_at_jersey_finish

After 31 stages we finally got to the podium 20th overall & 1st in class. What a tough event. We seemed to be on the go the whole time with 10 to 15 minutes most of the time with just the longer lunch time service.

Martin is already talking about going back next year & I would love to take the C2 back as I think a top 10 is a definite possibility.

Jersey Rally

Dave Edmunds who normally drives a very quick Honda Civic will try our C2 on Jersey next weekend. Dave has competed on Jersey for many years & is hoping for a good run on the islands tight & twisty lanes. The C2 will sport Edmunds Exhausts & Tyres sponsorship. Interest is already high as this is the first time a C2 has been to the island.

Martin who is over there already has asked for loads of grey & black tank tape in anticipation of close encounters with stone walls.

Yorkshire Rally

Well it's taken long enough but Kaz & Stefan finally managed to get onto the podium with a super 2nd place in this weekends Trackrod MC's Yorkshire Rally Citroen C2R2 Cup & 19th overall to boot.

First stage dramas when Kaz hit the first of the chicane's [they are designed to slow you down after all] gave the chase crew a bit of work to do but after that the C2 had a totally problem free run. Other crews were not so lucky, George Thomas had gearbox failure whilst Jason Pritchard suffered clutch failure.20071006_185652_06102007179

The new Pirelli tyres were a vast improvement over the 165's used on the opening round and our spring rates seem to work well.20071006_185432_06102007131

One of our ongoing problems is the noise level inside the car which has made it even more difficult for Kaz & for quite a lot of the event Stefan resorted to hand signals to help. For Rally GB we will have the all singing all dancing Peltor system as used by the WRC boys which we hope will solve the problem. Failing that you may see Kaz & Stefan using tin cans & string to talk to each other.

Congratulatios to Martin Laverty who took top C2 honours & Martin Roberts who kept up his impressive finnishing record & who must now be one of the favourites to take top spot in the championship.

Kaz & Stefan also managed to grab 3rd spot in the R2 group which this time took in the 2 litre Gp N cars with the likes of Matt Beebe & Versa Mikkola  competing.

Yorkshire National Rally

Gordon Nichol & co-driver Jane Nicol [note subtle spelling difference] Yes I know Gordon begins with a G, had a bit of a torrid time in the Ti Motorsport 1.8 MG ZR.

Drive shaft failure right at the end of the first 10 mile stage could have spelt the end but some quick spanner work ensured that the crew were able to continue.

Futher problems followed when the remote canister for one of the front suspension units got ripped off & with no emergency service available to the national competitors it was a case of very carefully through the remaining stages.

All credit to the crew who brought the car home in 16th place & 4th in an amalgamated class.

Well done Gordon & Jane

Yorkshire Rally Test

Both Kaz & Gordon Nichol enjoyed a sucessful test at Chris Birbecks excellent venue on the NE coast, any one needing a test venue should give Chris a ring. Our new suspension settings for the C2 seem to be spot on for Kaz & a few changes to the MG damper rates have Gogsie all smiles. Both cars have been reprepped and are now waiting for this afternoons scrutineering session. Kaz & Stefan are spending the morning recceing04102007125_3
